How to: Start Planning a Football Watch Party

LED football game

Stay warm inside and have an indoor movie party! A little snow outside shouldn’t ruin a fun time with friends or family. Before you invite your guests, plan a date and time for everyone to arrive. Once you’ve chosen what day would be best for your event, there are several preparations to take care of before your winter party. Be sure your location is able to accommodate the number of guests you plan on having. Most importantly, proper seating and a designated viewing area for your guests to relax in and for the screen to be set up at should be provided. Having available bathrooms and trash cans is also very important. Be sure your bathrooms are clean and have enough toilet paper and hand soap for guests to use. Trash cans placed around your home will minimize clean-up after your party.

Location

Make sure your watch party is being held in a location that can accommodate the number of expected guests. Proper seating should be available for fans so that they can be comfortable while watching the game. Consider renting foldable chairs or telling your guests beforehand to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to sit on. Along with making sure there are seating options for your guests, make sure both bathrooms and trash cans are available. Bathrooms should be stocked with soap and toilet paper, and trash cans should be around the area to minimize litter and clean up after the game is over. For no unpleasant surprises, make sure sprinkler systems are turned off if you plan on watching the game on a grass area. Another way to avoid unpleasant surprises is by checking the weather before the game.

Prepare for the Elements

For hot weather, make sure you supply plenty of water and have fans available to cool people down. If it is going to be cold, consider having portable heaters or a fire going to warm your guests. Feel free to move your event indoors if you are feeling concerned about the weather. It is most important that your party guests are comfortable and have fun. A good internet connection should be available and a portable device such as a laptop should be able to stream the game onto the screen. Be sure to test your device in the location beforehand to make sure that it is able to play at a good resolution and have no issues. If you are renting an LED display screen, we provide limited cable stations that may be able to play the game so that you do not need to stream from your device.

Theme for a Football Watch Party

raiders fans

Every party needs a theme. A way to express this theme is through decorating the area. For a football party, it is always fun when everyone shows up in their game day apparel. Hats, socks, jerseys, and face paint should all be welcomed on such an occasion. Along with team gear should come team decorations. Decorate the area with posters and streamers that match the team colors. Also, consider decking out your plates, cups, napkins, and utensils. Your guests will love to eat and drink with their team represented. Most of the time, you can find such items with team logos all over them, but if not, choose colors that match your team. If you want decorations that make it more clear, flags with team logos are easy to find. Go all out!

Pregame Activities for a Football Watch Party

Before kickoff, it is wise to think of ways to entertain your guests. Let the fun begin!

Pass the Football

Football fans are sure to enjoy passing around the old pig skin. Have fun before the game by playing a little of the game. If passing around the football isn’t enough for you, feel free to play for real. A quick game of flag football before your event will be sure to heighten the intensity. If you do not have flags or belts available to play with, simply go by the good ol' two hands on back rule. Find a sizable area where you can play against each other and go at it. Team captains can be selected to pick their teams' schoolyard style, or you can make things interesting with fans vs rivals. Winners not only get bragging rights, but may consider a prize to end the game. What else is a better way to wait for a football game than to play the game itself?

Pass the Frisbee

If you don’t have a football, that’s ok. You can still play pass with a frisbee. Ultimate frisbee is a great alternative to playing football without the football. The rules are pretty much the same, except you are throwing around a frisbee. Don’t get hit in the head!

Place Your Bets

If relaxing is more of your style, then have fun placing bets on the big game instead. Football Squares is a great football party game. First, construct a 10x10 grid on paper or a large poster board if available. Next, label each row and column from numbers 0 to 9. Your guests will have a choice of how to place their bets by putting their initials in the inner squares and putting in money. Every square on the board represents the final score a team will score in the game. For example, if your team is up 27-3 at the end of the first quarter, that means whoever had 7 on the first half of their square (representing the second digit of the first team’s score) and a 3 in the bottom half (representing the second digit of the second team’s score) wins for that quarter.

Play Cornhole

Cornhole is a great outdoor game to play. All you need are two cornhole boards and 8 bags. You can buy one already made or make your own! Make it interesting and have a tournament, winner takes all!

Delicious Football Party Snacks

Trash Can Nachos

You can’t have a football party without snacks. Treat your guests to some good eats before, during, and after the game. Chips are an easy one to provide, given all you have to do is buy some from the store and place them in a big bowl for everyone to enjoy. Spice things up by including some salsa or pico de gallo on the side. If you want to be a little more creative, nachos are a great alternative. Make things interesting by putting cheese, peppers, beans, carne asada, and pico de gallo on them. Remember to keep in mind those guests who have allergies or diets.

Pigs in Spicy Blankets

Another amazing tailgate snack is pigs in a blanket. These are mini sausages wrapped in warm dough that are easy to eat in one bite and dip in a flavory sauce. Mr. Fieri has a spicy recipe that you’ll never forget after your first bite.

Caramel Apples

For those with a sweet tooth, caramel apples are an amazing choice. Simply buy some apples and caramel for this sweet treat. Make getting your apples fun for your guests by bobbing for apples. Fill a large tub or bucket with water and place your apples inside. Players then catch with their teeth without using their arms. This is a classic fall game that pairs well with a football party.
